Plunge rolling: Thread rolling tools with the same pitch as the workpiece form the thread by penetrating the workpiece to its nominal diameter. The maximum thread length is equal to the width of the rolling tools.

Through-feed rolling: Used when the thread length is greater than the width of the rolling tools. Through-feed tools consist of three sections: lead-in, calibrating area, and run-out. Groove rolls have no pitch and are swiveled by the lead angle of the profile to be rolled.

Pitch rolls differ from groove rolls by having a pitch in the profile. The sum of the pitch angle and the swivel angle equals the pitch angle in the workpiece.
