The concept of this machine is extremely straightforward. The workpiece is placed into the machine. A fast-adjusting stop with pneumatic locking centers the workpiece inside the machine. Upon pressing a foot switch, the workpiece is pneumatically clamped and automatically conveyed to the drilling unit (30 m/min). The vertical spindles drill from below, preventing chips from remaining on the workpiece as they would on a machining center. The horizontal spindles operate on two sides of the workpiece. The workpiece length is unlimited, since the piece is conveyed to the drilling unit (X-axis). The drilling spindles are freely programmable either individually or in blocks, and move along the Y-axis. Drilling depth as well as the horizontal drills are controlled via the Z-axis. After all drilling operations are completed, the workpiece is either returned to the infeed side or, on request, conveyed to the outfeed side. Unlike conventional machining centers, where the workpiece is clamped using vacuum and vacuum clamps need to be adjusted to the workpiece size, this step is completely eliminated in the 3-axis point-to-point drilling machine.
