Swirl chamber diesel engine Type EM4-20, 4-cylinder (inline), 6024 cm³, water-cooled, non-synchronized 5-speed transmission, maximum speed: 60 km/h.
The successor to the H3 was the H3A truck. It was first introduced to the public at the Leipzig Spring Fair in 1949 and manufactured from mid-1950 to 1956 at the Zwickau state-owned vehicle plant HORCH, initially as a flatbed truck. The H3A was a complete redesign, developed as a long-nose truck with a diesel engine. The development of the diesel engine is based on a VOMAG design. At the Leipzig Spring Fair, the H3A was presented as a tractor unit with a tank semi-trailer, and further variants followed, including three-way tippers, livestock trucks, road tractors, tankers, as well as special bodies for postal and Red Cross services, and as box vans for furniture transport. Based on the H3A chassis, around 180 H3B forward control buses were produced at the LOWA plant in Bautzen.
The main area of use was predominantly in the civil sector, but the H3A was also used by the people's police, the paramilitary police force, and later by the NVA (National People's Army).
