Bed scrubbers are designed to remove gaseous or vaporous pollutants from an airstream. The process is carried out by bringing the contaminated air into contact with a scrubbing liquid, which absorbs or chemically reacts with the pollutants. The purified air is then discharged into the atmosphere, and the contaminated scrubbing liquid is disposed of in the environment or can be recovered and reused in the original or other processes. In the vertical counterflow design, the gas flows upward while the scrubbing liquid flows downward through spray banks. The absorption of gases takes place in the random packing section of the scrubbers, and the scrubbing liquid is introduced via a liquid distribution or spray system. A high-efficiency mist eliminator removes entrained liquids. The purified air is discharged into the atmosphere.
