The Hosokawa Alpine AFG fluidised bed jet mill is perfect for ultra-fine grinding of various dry materials with precise cut-point or maximum particle size control, thanks to the integrated classifier wheel design using the Hosokawa Alpine Turboplex ATP. This microniser can be used to pulverise coarse materials into fine powders across a range of industries where micronisation is required, such as mineral, chemical, food, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and more. This mill is capable of processing hard, coarse products up to approximately 10 Mohs hardness, with minimal wear and achieving extreme fineness with d97 values between 4 and 100 microns max particle size (depending on the product) at the lowest possible energy consumption. Grinding occurs at the bottom of the mill where nozzles inject high-pressure compressed gas into the fluidised bed of feed material, and the resulting gas jet propels the particles against each other, breaking and thus reducing their size. The grinding takes place in the centre of the chamber away from the mill housing, resulting in extremely low abrasion wear—making this mill optimal for processing abrasive materials or those requiring very low contamination in the final product. Within the same chamber, the air flow carries fine particles to the classifier wheel, where undesired coarse grains are rejected and returned to the milling zone for reprocessing, while the fine particles pass through the classification zone to the next stage, usually filtration. Sometimes a cyclone is installed between the mill and the filter, or even an air classifier. Owing to the large amount of process air required, only a slight temperature increase is expected during grinding compared to other granulation and comminution technologies.
