The medium to be separated is fed into the hollow central shaft of the decanter. Solids accumulate on the bowl wall due to centrifugal force. A cylindroconical scroll conveyor transports the solids ring to the discharge openings, where it is ejected into the solids housing. The two liquid phases separate according to their specific densities, forming two concentric liquid cylinders. The diameters of the liquid rings can be adjusted via peeling disc and overflow weir. One of the phases is discharged without pressure, while the other is discharged under pressure via the peeling disc.

The moisture content of the solids and the purity of the liquids can be regulated by:
- Variation of phase separation disc and peeling disc diameters
- Decanter bowl speed
- Scroll speed
