The Armfield Multi-purpose Processing Vessel is capable of performing all these functions as a standalone, mobile unit. Its mobility allows positioning within the laboratory beside other equipment as needed, and also facilitates easy storage. The hygienically designed, jacketed vessel features a working volume of 10 to 15 litres, enabling experiments and demonstrations without the need for large quantities of raw materials. An electric heating element at the base of the jacket heats water within the jacket, which in turn indirectly heats the vessel’s contents. This method ensures gentle heat transfer to ingredients, which are often heat-sensitive, and the convective distribution of heat avoids local “hot spots.” Cooling is achieved simply by dosing water from a domestic supply through the jacket. For chilling, cooled water is circulated in a closed loop from an integrated ice bank circulator in the base of the unit. A variable-speed emulsifier with various head options can be lowered into the process fluid. Hands-on experience can be gained by students, and the comprehensive instrumentation enables complete process logging. An automated valve switching system allows straightforward operation, letting the student/operator select the required process without having to manually operate a series of valves. Bcsdpsydh Agefx Abhsu Description Refer to the diagrams in Section 8 “Unit Schematics” as needed. 9.1 Overview The double-walled stainless steel vessel (1) has a polished, hygienic finish and a working capacity between 10 and 15 litres. Its contents are indirectly heated by a heating cartridge (16) located in the base of the jacket. The heating is protected against overtemperature by an adjacent thermostat (17). An emulsifier (2) can be inserted into the vessel using the locking handle (5). The on/off and speed control (14) for this unit is located on the motor housing, not on the main control panel. A green indicator light (7) shows when the emulsifier motor is running. The emulsifier head (3) can be easily exchanged with any of the supplied alternatives by simply loosening the wing nuts securing it to the drive shaft. A lid (6) prevents airborne contamination during extended heat treatment processes. Chilled water is circulated from an ice bank (12) below the processing vessel. After a period sufficient to form an ice reserve, this chilled water is delivered to the vessel jacket and cools the contents down to a storage/hardening-suitable temperature. The ice bank is generally regenerated by an initial rapid cooldown via recirculating cold water from a domestic supply. 3-way valves (10) and (11) allow automatic selection between open-circuit cooling and closed-circuit chilling. In both cases, the water passes through a flow meter (13), where throughput can be manually adjusted via a control valve (14). From the flow meter, the water enters the base of the vessel jacket after passing through an inline check valve (15).
