Fumigation involves flooding a room with a toxic gas to control pests or bacteria. Due to the use of toxic gases, special safety precautions are required. Fumigation is commonly used when storing organic materials (e.g., grain storage, port warehouses, silos, mills), as well as in churches to combat woodworm.

This is a device used for disinfecting rooms. Formaldehyde is heated on the left hotplate and, together with condensed water (right hotplate), released into the air stream in a room to kill all bacteria present.
