SETRA SG 221 HDS/Einzelstück/Messebus/Infobus

This SG 221 HDS was originally intended for shuttle service to Southern Europe, but remained a one-off, effectively serving as the basis for two more unique high-deckers: the S 215 HDS and S 216 HDS, which soon brought Kässbohrer many new customers. Additionally, this coach introduced the 'S' designation, signifying 'Super', as these new high-deckers truly lived up to their name: with a height of 3.63 meters, the elevated passenger compartment allowed for even more space—not only for increased luggage capacity (16 cubic meters), but also for additional service facilities. Extra fuel tanks could also be accommodated without issue. Regardless of which Super-Setra the bus operator chose, the remarkable engineering feat of these two new Ulm models was the fact that, apart from the front section, they were 100% constructed using components from the 200 series, featuring bolt-on compatibility with other Setra touring coaches. The 216 HDS offered space for up to 16 seat rows. In direct comparison, the version with underfloor cockpit featured even more space. With the Setra SG 221 HDS, Kässbohrer had a vision, but the ban on driving articulated coaches through France led the Ulm-based manufacturer to shift focus to solo coaches. The SG 221 HDS was subsequently used as a demonstration and information bus at exhibitions and conferences, serving as a meeting point for sales representatives and customers thanks to its generously equipped onboard kitchen.
