How Reverse Osmosis Works – RO

Reverse osmosis operates on the principle of osmosis, a process observable in nature. For instance, after a summer rain, cherries may burst. Here, the cherry juice is a concentrated solution; the raindrop is the dilute solution. The skin of the cherry acts as the semi-permeable membrane balancing concentrations—solvent flows into the cherry, attempting to reach equilibrium, and the resulting osmotic pressure may cause the fruit to burst. In reverse osmosis, this natural effect is inverted: pressure is applied to the concentrated solution to overcome its osmotic pressure, pushing the solvent through the membrane, while dissolved substances remain on the concentrate side.

Reverse Osmosis Water Filter (Reverse Osmosis – RO)

Reverse osmosis is a membrane-based process that retains both ions and particulate matter. This reverses the natural osmotic process. In RO systems, saline water (e.g., softened municipal water) is forced under pressure through semi-permeable spiral-wound membranes. Only the solvent—ultrapure water—passes through as permeate with a very low salt content. All other water constituents are concentrated and removed to drain as the concentrate stream.
