LECO C230 CARBON ANALYZER

Carbon Determination C230
The LECO C230 Carbon Analyzer is a microprocessor-based, software-controlled instrument for measuring the carbon and sulfur content in metals, ores, ceramics, and other inorganic materials. The C230 utilizes an induction furnace and measures carbon by infrared absorption.

The infrared (IR) source consists of a nichrome wire heated by resistance to 8500°C. The IR source emits visible energy as well as all wavelengths of the infrared spectrum. Carbon dioxide can be used for descriptive purposes; the same principle applies for sulfur detection. Carbon dioxide absorbs IR energy at a specific wavelength within the IR spectrum. Energy from the IR source is absorbed as the gas flows through the cell, thereby preventing it from reaching the IR detector.

An IR cell is used both for reference and for measurement. The total carbon, in the form of carbon dioxide, is continuously and simultaneously detected. The initial reference level or baseline for the detector is established by passing oxygen through the cell to purge residual atmospheric gases.
